Golf Terminology

People may be fooled into believing that Golfers speak in a vernacular language seen as distinct from what is standard language. These definitions for words and phrases will help the new golfer to better understand the game, and particularly the rules.

Golf Rules in Simple English

The rules section of the Rules of Golf runs over 180 pages. This 5 page document is an easy to understand version in “non-legal” or simple English, that will present the Beginner with a high level overview of the rules. Read and learn this and you will be more knowledgeable than most golfers 😉.

Golf Rules: Abbreviated Version

This 18 page abbreviated version from the actual rules, provides more than 95% of what a casual golfer is required to know about the rules. The purpose of each rule is detailed, and then only the most common and relevant aspects of each rule are shown. Read and learn this document and you will be more knowledgeable than almost all golfers 🤪😊.

The actual Rule Book has many colorful diagrams that help to explain many different golfing scenarios, and the USGA site that has the rules, also has videos and a quiz feature.

Golf Course Etiquette Explained

Along with the Rules, etiquette defines the behavior of the golfer, and shapes how people evaluate us as a person and a golfer. Golf Etiquette is not part of the rules, but it is every bit as important, allowing us to enjoy our game without adversely impacting the enjoyment of all the other golfers on the course.

Golf Course Explained

While some beginners, have experienced being on a golf course not everyone knows what to expect when they venture out on to the course for the first time. While some may have seen it on TV, nothing beats seeing all the features in a document that visually explains, GUR(Ground Under Repair), Bunkers, Rough, Markers and these are just a few examples.

Having played with countless first-time golfers, I have experienced first hand, the joy and trials of the first few rounds of golf. Just like learning the golf swing, there are many new things happening at once, like pace-of-play, finding errant balls, marking a card, and lots more. There are also helpful diagrams and hints that will help the Beginner understand how and where to best use a club for general on-course scenarios.

Beyond golf clubs, there is equipment that is used during a round to either assist with actual play, or simply to enhance the golfing experience. This document provides the beginner with a fast track to expediency. The majority of this equipment will be stored in the golf bag, while the rest is either personal or convenient.

One of the reasons we play golf is to take up the challenge of the game. For most people that happens by shooting lower scores and being more consistent. Handicaps are the best way of measuring consistency, progress and a means of competing fairly with your friends.

Putting Guide

Putting is 50% of the game, yet a small fraction of the total distance covered in the play of a hole or round. The putting stroke is the simplest golf stroke, yet requires the most precise execution. This document details, and adds to, the putting essentials covered in the first lesson.

Chipping Guide

The chipping stroke replicates many features from the putting stroke. Ensuring the correct application of the set-up fundamentals, along with stroke execution, will simplify the process of getting onto the putting green and closer to the flag more often.
